The abandoned residential school will go down in Seward as the first Alaskan flag flew.

Seward City Council voted on Monday to demolish the building, which dates back nearly a century.

Jesse Lee’s children’s home, abandoned since its earthquake in 1964, has long been a source of contention in the Kenai Peninsula community.

Board member Sue McClure said she is from the fourth generation of Seward, and she went to school with children from Jesse Lee Home.

She said she did not see the tearing of the building as destroying history, but rather the danger.

She said, “It is a building that was broken into while I was still in high school, and I was old.”

Members of the public split over what to do with the building. Some said it should be preserved.

The house is the second of three Jesse Lee homes. The first was built and abandoned in the Aleutians. The third was created in Anchorage after the 1964 earthquake destroyed Seward. It was run by the Methodist Church and primarily cared for Aboriginal children in Alaska, with a mixed legacy.

Several people told the council on Monday that they would erase the history of the indigenous people if they demolished the building.

Trish Nell, president of the Alaska Society for the Conservation of History, told the council that it was not just Bennie Benson, but about the comprehensive history of people who built a better life after living there. She said it can be renewed in stages, not all at once.

Others said the cost of renovating the building was not worth it, and they suggested concessions such as memorials, children’s museums or parks.

Mayor Christie Terry said that history should not be related to physical construction.

She said, “Seward loves history.” We want to preserve the legacy of this important institution in Seward. I think the spirit and purpose of what we are moving forward are important, and we’ve all talked about how we want to preserve as much of this building as possible. “

The city conditionally sold the building to non-profit Jesse Lee Home friends, who said she would use state grants to renovate the house. But in 2019, after the state began to question the location where the group, which amounted to approximately $ 2.2 million, the nonprofit had some answers, and the building returned to ownership of the city.

Now, the city will use about a million dollars from the state to destroy the building, remove dangerous materials and build a memorial on the site to honor former residents and former employees.
