Breakdown: How rare is Sunday’s 3.3-magnitude earthquake in the Gulf?

How often does this happen? Not often. We’ll detail why.

Louisiana, USA – You probably didn’t feel it, but a 3.3-magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Louisiana late Sunday night.

For this breakdown, we use tools from the US Geological Survey, the largest geosciences mapping agency in the country.

Sunday’s earthquake was at 11:15 p.m., 3.1 miles underwater, and just over 120 miles off the coast of Gulf Shores, Alabama. It’s not far from the southeast coast of Venice, Louisiana.

But how often does this happen? Not often.

This is a map of all earthquakes recorded off the coast of Louisiana since 1930.

Only 15 were recorded in the water and all but one were considered “light” on the Richter scale.

Additional data from LSU indicates that this map may be missing some dating back to the 19th century.

But the most recent—until Sunday night—was in May 2018. That’s when a 4.6-magnitude earthquake rocked the depths of the Gulf, 160 miles off the coast of New Orleans. Some people in Southeast Louisiana have reportedly felt it.

The only earthquake to occur on land in Southeast Louisiana in the past 33 years was in Livingston Parish in 2005.

The strongest earthquake in the last 45 years – a ‘moderate’ magnitude 5.3 – struck about 100 miles off the coast of Grand Isle in February of 2006.

There are dozens of ancient faults and faults all over our state and its coasts. Many are considered subsurface faults, as presented by the Gulf Coast Geosciences Society.

There are more than 100 suspected surface malfunctions identified by the Army Corps of Engineers.

All this to say: There’s a lot going on underground in Louisiana that we don’t even know about.

Mistakes are taken into account by the oil and gas industry and studied when it comes to ground loss and subsidence.

But when it comes to those faults that caused an earthquake, it’s safe to say Sunday’s occurrence was rare.
