Earthquake hits western Haiti and kills at least three earthquake news

Dozens were injured in a 4.9-magnitude earthquake that struck a Caribbean country while it was suffering from heavy rains and floods.

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake has struck western Haiti, killing at least three people and injuring more than two dozen, officials said.

The quake occurred Tuesday morning in the Grand Anse region, 300 kilometers (186 miles) west of the capital, Port-au-Prince, at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), according to the US Geological Survey.

Three deaths have been recorded so far, Christine Monkeli, head of the civil protection agency in Grande-Anse, told AFP.

“They are members of the same family and they were killed when their house collapsed,” Monkeli said. She explained that the Civil Protection Agency also counted 28 injured, adding that the search for “other possible injuries” is still continuing.

The quake occurred as the Caribbean nation was reeling from torrential rains and floods, killing at least 42 people and displacing thousands in recent days.

At least 15 people have been killed and many are still missing after heavy rains caused widespread flooding and landslides across Haiti.

It also struck nearly two years after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck southern Haiti, killing more than 2,200 people, with Li Kai suffering the most damage.

In 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake near the densely populated capital killed at least 200,000 people and caused widespread damage to buildings.

Eric Mbitapakana, a World Food Program official in Jeremy, the capital of the Grand Anse department, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that objects fell around his house as a result of the morning earthquake.

He said he and his other colleagues are considering sleeping outdoors if there are strong aftershocks. “I thought the whole house was going to fall on me,” Mbitapakana told the news agency.

He recalls the moments after the earthquake: “There were a lot of people in the street, there was a lot of panic.”

Smaller quakes earlier this year in southern Haiti led to Tuesday’s larger quake, Claude Prebet, a geologist and engineer with the Haiti Office of Mines and Energy, told Radio Karibis.

Haiti is already struggling to meet the needs of its citizens, some 5.2 million of whom need humanitarian aid, according to the United Nations.

Gang violence has escalated in the country, particularly after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021, and hunger has spread. June also marked the beginning of the hurricane season in Haiti.

“I am particularly concerned about this situation at a time when the Haitian population is already extremely vulnerable,” Jean-Martin Bauer, Acting Humanitarian Coordinator for Haiti, said Monday of the recent storms and floods, which affected more than 37,000 people.
