A rare earthquake destroys French homes, schools and churches

About 170 people have been relocated from the western French town of La Ligny after an earthquake on Friday night.

The earthquake, which is believed to have measured between 5.2 and 5.8, was felt by residents from Rennes in the northwest to Bordeaux in the southwest.

Homes, schools, and churches were damaged, and hundreds of buildings were declared uninhabitable.

Earthquakes of magnitude above five are unusual for France, the last of which hit the country in November 2019.

Two people were injured in the town of Deux-Sevres following Friday’s quake.

The Charente-Maritimes region, north of Bordeaux, was particularly affected.

In La Ligny, local fire service chief Didier Marcaillo warned that the church had become “completely unusable” and a senior regional government official said most homes in the city center had been damaged.

“The school should be closed as a precaution,” said Nicholas Basilere.

A woman cried as she told local broadcaster BFMTV that she could no longer live in her home. “I wouldn’t wish that on anyone,” said the woman, who was named Christine. “In my son’s room, you can put your whole hand through a crack in the wall.”

Prime Minister Elizabeth Borne described the quake as “extraordinary” and expressed solidarity with those “who may have been concerned”.

“Obviously we are going to make sure everyone gets rehousing,” Ms Bourne said.

Home Secretary Gerald Darmanin said the government would initiate a rapid natural disaster identification procedure to help quickly assess structural damage to buildings.
