Shakin’ it up: Joburg residents stunned by 2.2-magnitude earthquake originating in Soweto

The Earth Science Council confirmed that an earthquake occurred Thursday morning at approximately 03:15 in the south of Johannesburg.

The people of Johannesburg were woken up Thursday morning by another earthquake.

This comes just weeks after another earthquake originating from the Boksburg area was felt in the early hours of June 10th. It had a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale.

The epicenter of the quake is in the Boksburg region, just a few kilometers outside the proprietary East Rand mine, said spokesman for the Earth Sciences Council Mahlatsi Mononila.

CGS confirmed that Thursday’s earthquake occurred at approximately 03:15 in south Johannesburg.

It was recorded at a magnitude of 2.1 by the South African National Seismological Network, which monitors seismic activities occurring within South Africa and in the South African region.

The Department of Public Security said the epicenter of the quake was in the Soweto district.

Social media users took to Twitter to share their alarm, with some describing the activity as thunder-like:
