An earthquake shook the far eastern province of Indonesia on Monday, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries.

The USGS said the 5.4-magnitude quake was centered 135 kilometers (83 miles) southwest of Apipura, a sub-district of Jayapura, the capital of Papua province. It occurred at a depth of 13 kilometers (8 miles).

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said there was no danger of a tsunami but warned of possible aftershocks. The initial earthquake intensity was 6.4. Variations in early measurements of earthquakes are common.

Papua has a population of over a million, and it is one of the least populous provinces in Indonesia.

In February, another shallow earthquake shook the county, killing four people who were unable to escape when a floating restaurant collapsed into the sea.

Indonesia is a seismically active archipelago with a population of 270 million and is frequently hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis.

Last November, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake killed at least 602 people and injured more than 7,700 people in West Java province. In January 2021, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake killed more than 100 people and injured nearly 6,500 in the province of West Sulawesi.
