M6.0 earthquake hits Papua this morning, says BMKG

TEMPO.CO, JAKARTA – The Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) announced on July 3, 2023 that a tectonic earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale shook Kirum, Papua this morning at 09:51 AM (02:51 GMT) . According to Dariono, head of earthquake and tsunami management at BMKG, the quake was “shallow and caused by active fault movement.”

Dariono stated that the quake was caused by the movement of a sliding fault and struck 79 km southwest of Kirum at a depth of 10 km.

In Wamena, Centani felt the quake similar to the vibrations of a passing truck. The scale of the intensity of the earthquake’s vibrations in the region is on III MMI. However, the earthquake was strongly felt by some people in Jayapura with an intensity scale of II to III MMI.

Based on the model generated by BMKG, this earthquake will not trigger a tsunami. Additionally, as of 10:05 a.m., there are no potential sequels on record.
