Mayon shows increased earthquake activity – Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines – State seismologists have detected an increase in volcanic earthquakes in Mayon City since Monday.

The latest bulletin from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) stated, “Since 3:47 PM (Pacific Time) yesterday (July 3, 2023), the Mayon Volcano network began recording a continuous, tremor-like series of weak volcanic earthquakes that stabilized and increased in strength this morning and lasted until the present.”

“This has resulted in a sudden and sustained increase in the level of seismic energy release as of July 3, 2023,” Fevolks said on Tuesday.

The agency added that volcanic earthquakes last about 11 seconds and are repeated at intervals of every five seconds.

She also observed the collapse of the dome and pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) from the summit.

Phivolcs also reported that rock activities continue with PDCs flowing for about two minutes down the Basud valley (eastern slope), Mi-isi gully (southern slope) and Bonga gully (southeastern slope) at a distance of 1 to 2 km from the crater.

A falling cloud of ash was also seen.

“Fly ash impacts from PDCs have been reported by residents of Genobatan Township and Ligao City,” said Vivoleks.

Meanwhile, volcanologists in the state have noted a rise in sulfur dioxide emissions to 1,558 tons per day.

The agency said the event was “likely driven by shale gas activity within the edifice”.
