A volcanic eruption rocked Iceland after a series of earthquakes recorded over the weekend.

Drone footage shows lava flowing on the Reykjanes Peninsula, near the capital, Reykjavík.

The country’s Meteorological Office (IMO) said today that it comes after intense earthquake activity in the region.

“Right now, it’s a very small blowout,” stressed Matthew Roberts of IMO’s Services and Research Division.

On Sunday, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck all of Iceland, one of the strongest in recent days.

According to the site, there are no arrival and departure disturbances at the main Keflavik airport yet.

A statement from the IMO reads: “An eruption has begun northwest of Little Hurtor.

Last night, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake was detected only ESE of Mount Keilir. This event is the largest in the current seismic activity. Aftershocks are very likely and can reach M4.

Two earthquakes were detected over the M4 yesterday morning, the larger M4.3 at 8.28am next to Keilir.

On July 8, an earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale was detected in Lake Clevarvatn. This earthquake is most likely caused by stress changes.

Since July 4, more than 1,200 earthquakes have been detected between Fagradalsvial and Keeler. The current swarm is caused by the dam breaking under the area.
