Iceland: A volcano erupts in Little Hurtur after weeks of earthquakes

A volcanic eruption south of the Icelandic capital Reykjavík has sent plumes of smoke billowing across a region known for its vast lava fields, volcanoes and geothermal activity.

The Icelandic Met Office (IMO) said the “minor” eruption started Monday on Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula but no ash has been emitted and no disturbance has so far been reported at the country’s Keflavik airport.

There is a 200-metre (656-foot) fissure on the slopes of Little Heather Mountain, the IMO said, “from which lava gushes forth as a series of fountains”.

Scientists have warned of a possible volcanic eruption after monitoring hundreds of small earthquakes in recent weeks.

The images show streams of lava flowing along dark fields, with small fires in the distance and thick smoke billowing in the air.

The IMO said that since the volcano erupted in an uninhabited area, there were no “immediate risks” to communities or infrastructure – but warned people not to venture near the area, saying there would be a build-up of “dangerously high levels of volcanism”. gases.”

The International Maritime Organization said winds will carry some of these gases to the north, which could affect several regions including the Icelandic capital.

The Reykjanes Peninsula Regional Destination Management Office also issued a warning about gas levels on Monday.

The office said in a statement that the peninsula’s police chief had ordered all passes leading to the volcano to be closed due to “massive, life-threatening gaseous pollution,” after speaking with scientists.

She added that authorities are working to restore access to the volcano once the contamination has cleared.
