Prince Harry’s visit to the UK is already getting messy

Last week, Prince Harry’s spokesperson announced that he would be returning to the UK with Meghan Markle and their children. This will be the family’s first trip to Harry’s home country since attending Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee gala in 2022. Finally, the children got to spend time with their grandfather, King Charles, and Harry was able to get closer to reconciliation with his father. That sounds really good, right? Well, maybe not. Now he may not be able to bring his family with him at all. Let’s take a look at what’s happening.

Harry’s trip across the pond marks one year until the Invictus Games, an Olympic-style competition for wounded soldiers that Harry started in 2014, take place in Birmingham next summer. On Friday, multiple outlets reported that Meghan, Lilibet and Archie would join Harry in the UK. People reports that Harry and Meghan have scheduled several meetings and public appearances related to the Invictus Games or Harry’s other charity work. (Archie and Lilibet were not scheduled to appear.)

Harry and Charles haven’t seen each other much in recent years. After Charles announced his cancer diagnosis in 2024, Harry flew to London to see him, but the king reportedly left just 45 minutes after his son arrived. During their most recent trip last year, Harry and Charles had what the palace described as a brief “private tea” at Clarence House, the king’s London residence, which reportedly lasted about 55 minutes.

Now it looks like Charles and Harry will be seeing each other for more than an hour. Earlier this month, the BBC reported that Harry and his wife had been offered a royal residence where they could stay during their visit. (They reportedly accepted the offer.) The Sun later also reported that King Charles had offered to pay for the security of the Sussexes, who have long been interested in bringing his children to England.

As always, security. Prince Harry has long fought for taxpayer support for his family in Britain, whose security he and Meghan lost when they stepped down from royal duties. In an interview last year, he said security had “always been an obstacle” for his family. “I want reconciliation with my family,” Prince Harry told the BBC after being once again denied government security details. “There is no need to continue the fight. Life is precious. I don’t know how much longer my father will be around. Because of security concerns, he won’t talk to me. But I think it would be good to make up.”

Father and son seemed to be on track to reconcile by Friday. Shortly after announcing that his whole family would be coming, Harry learned clearly that his official request for police security while in the UK had been rejected again. On Sunday, the BBC reported that the decision has led Harry to reconsider bringing Meghan and the children to the UK.

A source told the Guardian that Harry was “distraught” by the decision, claiming the family’s plans were “unravelled from under their feet at the 11th hour”. “The hope is for Archie and Lilibet to meet their grandfather, but there’s no way that can happen if they’re chased by paparazzi from the moment they get off the plane and wherever they go,” the source added.

Harry is definitely doing his best. On Monday, his spokesperson told PEOPLE that the family trip was (tentatively) still in the works. “Prince Harry’s program includes both public and private participation across the country. A spokesperson said in a statement to the tabloid that safe accommodation is only one element of an effective protective security plan because risk follows the people, not the place.” “The Duke continues to explore all possible options to ensure that visits can take place safely and give children the opportunity to enjoy the UK.”

To be honest, he had no intention of seeing his brother anyway, so I guess this whole mess didn’t really matter to him. William and Harry have had a frosty relationship since leaving the UK, a relationship that reportedly worsened following the infamous Oprah interview and Harry’s memoir. Although tensions between Harry and Charles appear to have eased, William still holds a grudge. Last week, Vanity Fair reported that William was upset that Charles was “bending over backwards” to facilitate Harry’s visit.

A source said: “William won’t be meeting his brother. He thinks Harry will stay miles away to avoid any awkward encounters when he visits.” “Harry has repeatedly tried to contact him, but William has not answered his calls. He has no interest in reconciliation at all and the fact that his father is bending over backwards to make Harry’s visit happen has become a source of deep frustration for William.”

We already know that Meghan is a professional hostess and will almost certainly bring gifts. Whether she goes or not, you best believe Charles will get something out of As Ever. He already has his own fun stuff, so I don’t think she’d want to give him any of that. (The relationship is too subtle right now.) The safest bet would be edible flowers.
