Pocatello – Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Idaho State University and Center for Energy Fellow Mostafa Meshaal was honored with the Alfred Nobel Prize for 2020 for being the lead author of the paper “Designing Low Damage Earthquakes to Build an Accelerated Bridge”, which appeared in the Bridge Engineering Journal July 2019.

The award consists of a certificate and a cash prize of $ 6,500, and Meshaal will be honored by his counterparts at the annual membership meeting of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in October. The prize is awarded for a technical paper of exceptional advantage, provided that the author has not passed since his thirty-fifth birthday at the time of publication of the printed paper by the nominating community. If two authors write a paper, the author must be 35 or younger. The award winner is chosen by a committee of five representatives from each community.

Meshaal praised and thanked the co-author of the paper, Alessandro Palermo, from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. Their paper was one of the best papers downloaded in Structural Engineering in 2019. It was part of a special group about expedited bridge construction and is still the most downloaded paper in that collection so far.

Mashaal said that the paper was about building earthquake-resistant bridges, using precast concrete technologies so that bridges can be built quickly and withstand large earthquakes with minimal damage to avoid job losses or major repair.

“It contains a kind of technology that mainly involves refocusing the bridge after the earthquake, so it brings it back to its place – it won’t be tilted,” said Meshaal.
