Study of New Zealand kelp reveals the history of earthquakes

A team of researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand has discovered that studying kelp growth genes at sea could reveal some history of earthquakes in a particular region. In their research published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the group describes their study of kelp samples from sites with earthquake history along New Zealand’s coast and what they learned from it.

Previous research has shown that kelp can be an aggressive species of seaweed when there are new opportunities for migration. It has also been proven that herutocontes highly protect its territory – once established, other types of kelp cannot move. In this new effort, researchers took advantage of both attributes to learn more about kelp and earthquake history part of New Zealand.

Earlier research showed that New Zealand was hit by a very serious earthquake about 800 years ago on the South Island. The earthquake was so severe that some parts of the sea floor were raised above the water line. The researchers noted that such an earthquake was very likely to have exposed some of the newly formed seabed – ripe for occupation by kelp and other seabed life. The team questioned whether some of the newly formed seabed might have been inhabited by migratory kelp, and if so, whether there was evidence of it in their DNA.

To find out, the researchers collected a large number of moss samples along the fault line near Dunedin. Returning to their laboratory, they conducted a genetic study of the samples and found evidence that the new kelp was moving to an area that was occupied by the ancient kelp. They were able to draw the territorial boundaries of the herb by looking at their genes. They were also able to see that the new kelp moved to the area around the time of the earthquake 800 years ago. The kelp that lives there today are their descendants.

Researchers suggest that their results only show how regional kelp – there was little evidence of mixing old and new kelp, which means that the new kelp has remained stable for 800 years.
