The third earthquake in a week in Groningen

The third Groningen earthquake was in one week on Sunday, with a magnitude of 2.3. Moments later there was a aftershock of 0.9, according to NOS reports.

Last Tuesday, the region experienced its worst earthquake in a year, with a magnitude of 2.7 in Lubosum. Last year, 87 ground motions were reported, 11 stronger than 1.5.

After years of protests from Groningen residents and an ongoing battle over compensation for housing damage, the government plans to stop extracting gas from Europe’s largest field under the region by the end of 2022.
