Can animals predict natural disasters?

On December 26, 2004, an earthquake off the northwest coast of North Sumatra in Indonesia caused a fatal tsunami that killed hundreds of thousands across the region.
Many heartbreaking stories of tragedy arose, but there is one that is still of particular interest to scholars.
According to many eyewitnesses, many animals behaved strangely before the tsunami, as many fled to high ground.
This is not the first time that people have noticed this phenomenon, and it will likely not be the last.
In 2012, researchers noticed that goats grazing on the slopes of the Italian Mount Etna escaped hours before the volcano erupted.
Just before the earthquake in the Indian state of Gujarat in 2001, it was reported that dogs barked without interruption and were running in panic.
On February 4, 1975, the authorities of the Chinese city of Haicheng were ordered to evacuate after receiving reports of strange animal activity, which saved lives when an earthquake struck shortly after.

Ancient Greek historians wrote about mice, wedding and snakes fleeing Helic before the earthquake struck the region in 373 BC.
With all of these cases recorded, is it safe to say that animals are able to predict earthquakes? The answer is more complicated than one might think.
It is known that animals have survival instincts that allow them to hunt or evade predators, and perhaps these instincts are what help them predict imminent disasters.
For example, when a storm is about to crash, birds bounce down as they can detect changes in air pressure. Fish are known to escape into deep waters when a hurricane is imminent.
But how do animals predict earthquakes?
Some scientists suggest that animals sense the shell of the earth’s crust, while others suggest that they discover gases released from the earth.

Earthquakes can generate ultrasound sounds, with less frequency than the human ear can detect, which can be how animals capture them.
Many scientists still doubt that animals are a good indicator of natural disasters, and it is hard to prove that they are. Animals simply behave strangely from time to time, and it is not mathematically impossible for their misconduct to coincide with a natural disaster.
If the animal behaves strangely and no natural disaster occurs soon after, people will not notice this behavior much.
However, it is widely agreed that animal senses allow them to discover environmental changes long before a person is able to do so.
It is also possible that animals behave oddly before a natural disaster occurs because they are dismayed by any environmental change they discover.
Ultimately, animals are unlikely to have a “sixth sense” of any kind, but they are simply more observant of the signs of impending natural disasters than humans.
