69 News Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Berks | Berks Regional News

Reading, Pennsylvania – The Promise From Day One: “A newsletter you can contact yourself.”

“The Pyrex release started on July 24, 1995,” said Matt Roth, who started out as a newscast producer 5:30 in November of that year.

The big story on the first day was the high heat and humidity that surrounded Brix County.

WFMZ-TV celebrates its 25th anniversary 69 News Berks Edition. The live news broadcast appeared at 5:30 pm on July 24, 1995.

From extreme weather to breaking news and sports, over the past 25 years, 69 News has faced both good and bad with its loyal viewers in Berks County.

Philadelphia announcer Phillies Greg Murphy, who joined the Pyrex version as his first sports reporter, remembers: “We’ve done it.

“So I got really green,” Murphy added. “I got a lot of help.” “We were excited. We were the new type in Reading, and I think viewers were excited to get their newscasts.”

Matt Roth joined the news team and Mike Reinert joined the sales team during that first year.

Kenneth Roth said: “Our Berks Newsroom was a small office inside Reading Eagle Building, close to Court Street.”

Reinert added: “Then after that first year, we moved to the next house on Bain Street.”

325 Pennsylvania Street will be the pyrex edition home for the next decade.

The team changed and grew. 69 News anchor Wendy Davis started reporting in Reading about 18 months ago.

“The early people paved the way, but the TV news was still relatively new [in Berks County]With TV teams presenting at every news event, Davis said, “You know, you have to prove that you’re like anything.”

Everyone still remembers those early challenges.

“We have taken an additional step, as an affiliate office,” Murphy said. “We had to make sure we got the tape back, released it, then sent it to Allentown to make sure it made the air.”

Davies recalls: “When we had all those thunderstorms, the links between Allentown and Reading would drop a lot, and if people knew what we went through to sometimes air these shows …”

It was a problem that could mean driving tapes to Allentown or to a relay point in Kutztown.

Stacey Stauffer, who was recently seen on QVC, was one of the first producers of the 5:30 newscast.

“Four prisoners were running the asylum,” said Stover, who recalled some of the long days and how close the team was in the small newsroom. “We were excited, but we also felt vulnerable.”

In the early days, communicating with anchors in a studio 35 miles away was challenging.

More changes came in September 1998, with Berks released at 10:30 to replace the retransmission from the 5:30 newscast.

“The addition and presentation of the news at 10:30 was a nice feature,” said Reinert.

In late 2007, employees made a great move to reach the latest basement space of Albert Boscov Plaza at 225 Court Street.

69 News team members take part in the annual Halloween synagogue along Kotztown Road in Muhlenberg.

Commitment to society continued through all of this, as employees participated in marches, professional fairs and festivals …

“My favorite thing about being a Berks Edition product was its time [Berks] Stuffer said the jazz festival.

“We try to be in the good things that happen in society,” said Reinert.

Getting the story means going anywhere, from the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast in 2005 to the earthquake-stricken Puerto Rico in 2020.

Karen Mallet reports from WFMZ Live to the 10:30 Berks Edition newsletter from above on the floor of the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

Berks Edition crews also got a head start covering political party conferences and presidential inauguration, R-Phils and Phillies in Spring Training in Florida, Eagles in Super Bowl, and even the NBA draft.

In some ways, things have not changed.

Murphy said: “Everyone knew what they should do, and everyone was proud of what we were trying to do every night.”

“The foundation on which Berks Edition is still today is the style and feel that was brought together in those early years,” Davis continued.

Berks Edition won the station’s first Emmy award for premium news broadcasts in 2005, and it’s still committed to fully covering it, and there are no plans to slow down.

“Oh my God, 25 years have passed,” said Murphy.

“Where does the time go?” Stauffer asked.

“I don’t know where the years have gone,” Reinert said sarcastically. “I don’t know where my hair has gone.” “I just hope we can continue Berks Edition, God willing, for a long time to come.”
