Rina Sawayama says her Japanese nationality forbids her top music awards
Although she has lived in the UK for 25 years and considers herself British, the 29-year-old musician said she was not allowed to submit her music for the Mercury Prize or the national categories to the BRITs because she had indefinite leave to stay in the country rather than full British citizenship.
Unlike similar national awards, such as the Turner Prize and the Ivor Novello Songwriting Awards, Mercury Prize and Brit Awards nominees must show proof of citizenship to qualify. Both awards are organized by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).
Japan, where Sawayama was born, is one of many countries that ban dual citizenship and the 29-year-old star has said she is reluctant to relinquish her citizenship due to ties to her family members.
“If I was being snubbed, I would be like, ‘Okay, okay, great … let’s make a better record and move on,'” she told the publication. “But the fact that I wasn’t even eligible, it’s like… I don’t even know what that emotion was. It was another one.”
Sawayama released his self-titled debut album in April, to critical acclaim.
She went on to say that having contributed so much to the UK, she believes she should be ‘eligible to be celebrated’.
“I am signed to a British label,” she said. “I have lived here continuously for the past 25 years. I am only tax registered in this country. The entire album was recorded in the UK as well as Los Angeles. It was mixed in the UK “United. My lyrics are in English, except for a verse in a song.”
A spokesperson for BPI said in a statement: “The BRIT Awards and the Hyundai Mercury Prize aim to be as inclusive as possible in their parameters, and their eligibility processes and criteria are constantly being reviewed.”
