An earthquake has been reported near Lake Almanor

(FOX40.COM) – California's northernmost region was hit by a second earthquake in five days Wednesday morning in Plumas County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The 3.6-meter earthquake was detected at approximately 1:30 a.m. near the southeast shore of Lake Almanor, near the community of Canyondam.

The northern coast of California has a long history of strong earthquakes

It was discovered at a depth of 1.6 miles, and there were no reports of any damage from the earthquake. The USGS received nearly two dozen reports of people who felt the quake.

Canyondam is located just over 160 miles northeast of Sacramento and about 81 miles from the city of Red Bluff.

This area is known to have a history of seismic activity and recently experienced a much larger earthquake that caused some damage to nearby communities.

In May 2023, a 5.5-meter earthquake occurred beneath the surface of Lake Almanor within days of the 10th anniversary of a 5.7-meter earthquake in May 2013 that shook the same area.

The 2023 earthquake was felt across parts of Nevada and the Bay Area.

While no major damage was reported, the California Geological Society alerted residents to inspect homes near the epicenter.

After the original quake, several aftershocks were recorded in the same area, the strongest measuring 3.0, according to the USGS.

This also isn't the first earthquake to rock far northern California in February, as a 4.9-meter quake was felt in the North Shore communities of Ferndale and Eureka.

At 7:08 a.m., the 4.9 magnitude earthquake was detected about 60 miles west of the small coastal community of Petrolia in Humboldt County and at a depth of 1.4 miles.

Petrolia is located about 270 miles northwest of Sacramento and 251 miles north of San Francisco.
