ADRA continues relief efforts one year after the earthquake that struck Türkiye and Syria

On February 6, 2023, a major earthquake struck the border area between Türkiye and Syria. This earthquake and hundreds of aftershocks caused widespread devastation on every side. Thousands of women, men and children have lost their lives. Basic infrastructure, including health facilities, was destroyed.

At least 8.8 million people were affected by the earthquake that struck the Syrian Arab Republic (Syria), with an estimated 15.3 million people, before the earthquake, already in need of humanitarian assistance.

“When the earthquake happened, my sister and I were sleeping. My mother woke us up and asked us to get out of the house. It was shaking in all directions. We were very afraid and ran into the street, and there were a lot of people,” said Adam, an eight-year-old resident of the area. From the first hours after the disaster, ADRA teams were on the ground providing emergency assistance to the most affected people, especially children, pregnant women and the elderly: distributing emergency supplies (food, drinking water, blankets, etc.) and providing necessary supplies. How ADRA was able to help with your donation

In Turkey, ADRA supported rescue teams and various local organizations, which provided emergency shelters and relief supplies to those affected. In total, more than 50 relief workers were deployed and more than 9,000 people were provided with winter-proof tents, gas stoves and warm clothes. Following the emergency relief operations, ADRA has ended its work in Turkey and is now focusing its assistance on families in Syria, where relief work began immediately after the earthquake.

ADRA has been working in Syria for many years and was therefore able to help immediately after the disaster struck. The team of approximately 110 staff and volunteers is deployed in three regions: Latakia, Aleppo and Hama. In the first few days after the disaster, they distributed 14,005 meals, 3,572 food baskets, and 590 blankets, in addition to repairing three emergency shelters. In the first phase, aid reached about 46,000 women, men and children.

What to do now: Post-earthquake reconstruction

In the first phase, ADRA ensured that people remained on the land. The agency is working on reconstruction in Latakia, Aleppo and Hama. Destroyed schools are being restored. School children who can no longer go to school due to the earthquake receive an additional fee. This makes it easier for them to return to school. Families also receive technical advice and financial support to enable them to reopen their small businesses. This allows families to get back on their feet.

Families who have not yet been able to repair their homes also receive support. The shelters have been renovated and updated with proper hygiene facilities. ADRA is distributing aid packages containing hygiene products, diapers, warm clothes, mattresses and blankets. ADRA provides cleaning products to improve hygiene in various group shelters. Families receive a grant so they can repair their damaged homes. The agency also works with local authorities to repair water systems, such as water channels and overhead water tanks.

Nahla is a mother of two daughters and two sons. Before the devastating earthquake, they were all living a simple but contented life. She always wanted her four children to go to school. The family home was destroyed in the earthquake on February 6, 2023, and Nahla lost her job as a cleaner. Since then, the five of them have been living in one room in the Omar Abu Risha collective shelter. Nahla is grateful that her children are still alive, but the effects of the earthquake are everywhere. The girls still go to school, but the sons have left school and gone to work to support their families.

Nahla met the ADRA organization at the collective shelter center, where it distributes food and hygiene products. One day, Nahla had the opportunity to take care of cleanliness in the collective center. I accepted and drew new hope from this job.
