An earthquake hits Almaty, and residents evacuate buildings

ASTANA – Residents of Almaty were hit by a major earthquake on March 4, prompting mass evacuations and emergency response measures, the Ministry of Emergency Situations announced on its Telegram channel.

According to the Almaty Emergency Management Department, the seismic event occurred at 11.22 a.m., and the National Scientific Center for Seismic Observations and Research processed information about the epicenter to confirm its intensity.

In order to ensure the safety of the public, the administration activated an audio signal and took control of the television and radio channels at 11:22 am.

Initial reports indicate that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 31 kilometers south of Almaty, with an MPV of 6.1 and an energy class of 13.2. Almaty Density scored five points, while Almaty Region and Zetyso Region scored five and two points, respectively.

In response to the seismic activity, city residents left their homes en masse, sharing videos and photos on social media. Emergency response teams began evacuating various buildings, and the operations headquarters were deployed in the city.

Hotlines are now working in the emergency department of the city of Almaty and the Almaty and Zhytso regions.

According to the press service of the city of Akimat, the mayor of Almaty Akym, Yerbolat Dosayev, was present at the operational headquarters since 11.40 a.m., leading discussions on the subsequent action plan in the aftermath of the earthquake.
