Britain considers Gandhi coin to commemorate Indian Independence Icon | British News

The UK is considering issuing coins to commemorate India’s independent hero Mahatma Gandhi, which is raising interest in the contributions of people from black, Asian and other minority (BAME) communities.

British Finance Minister Rishi Sunak said to send a letter to the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (RMAC) to recognize individuals in this community.

“RMAC is currently considering coins to commemorate Gandhi,” said the Treasury.

Born in 1869, Gandhi defended nonviolence throughout his life and played an important role in India’s struggle for independence. His birthday, October 2, is considered International Non-Violence Day.

He is often referred to as India’s “father of the country” and was assassinated by a Hindu radical just a few months after leading India free from British rule on January 30, 1948.
