2 small earthquakes in Surry County Friday evening

The first was a 2.3 magnitude earthquake that struck about 20 miles west of Mount Airy. According to the USGS, shaking was felt more than 9 miles from the center. The interval between the two earthquakes was less than an hour. The depth of the earthquake was about 6.8 km.

The second quake was very close to the first, with a magnitude of 1.5, and was felt about 6 miles away. The location was about 20 miles west of Mount Airy. Both earthquakes were felt near Sparta with weak shaking.

The last relatively uncommon earthquake in Sparta in 2020 was a magnitude 5.1 caused by a fault east of the New Madrid Seismic Zone. The depth of the earthquake was 7.6 km. This earthquake was the largest in North Carolina in nearly 100 years.
