Aftershocks of the earthquake halt the demolition of a leaning building in Taiwan. The death toll rose to 13

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Demolition of a building leaning precariously after an earthquake that struck Taiwan was halted Saturday because of aftershocks that made it lean more, media reports said.

The red building, about 10 stories tall and leaning over a street in the city of Hualien, has become an iconic image from the 7.4 magnitude quake that also buried people under rocks in nearby Taroko National Park, a popular hiking destination about 25 kilometers away ( 15 miles) northwest of Hualien City.

The death toll rose to 13 after a third victim was found on Chakadang Road in the park. Six other people are still missing, including three on the same road. More than 400 people remained stranded three days after the earthquake in isolated locations due to damage. Most of them are in a hotel in Taroko Park.

Hundreds of aftershocks have struck the region since Wednesday morning's quake off Taiwan's east coast, including a 5.2-magnitude quake shortly before noon on Saturday.

Survivors told horrific tales of rocks falling on roads, trapping them in tunnels until rescuers arrived to free them.

The relatively low number of deaths from the strong earthquake is attributed to strict building standards and extensive public education campaigns on the earthquake-prone island. The earthquake was the strongest to hit Taiwan since a 7.7-magnitude earthquake occurred in 1999, killing 2,400 people.

Rescuers plan to bring heavy equipment to try to recover two bodies stuck under rocks on Chakadang Road. Among the three dead and three missing on the road was a family of five. Search and recovery work was canceled Friday afternoon due to aftershocks.

In Hualien City, a city official said experts will discuss how to proceed with demolition of the leaning building. The offerings were made in a ceremony before the demolition began the day before.
