Video shows an earthquake in Ishikawa, Japan, not an “earthquake near Fukushima”

The video was also shared on social media platform X and TikTok, and embedded alongside other clips on Facebook.

It was circulated online after Fukushima was hit by a 6.0 magnitude earthquake.

Japan is one of the most tectonically active countries in the world, as it is exposed to about 1,500 tremors every year, the vast majority of which are mild.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries after the earthquake, which was centered at a depth of 40 kilometers and was also felt by residents of the capital, Tokyo.

But the video does not show footage of the April earthquake.

New Year's Day earthquake

A reverse image search on Google using keyframes from the video led to a similar clip published by Japanese public broadcaster NHK on January 1, 2024 (archived link).

The Japanese-language caption read: “Video from a camera installed by NHK on the roof of Suzu City Hall in Ishikawa Prefecture, shows some houses with peeling Japanese roof tiles and what appears to be a collapsed building in the background.”

The timecode shown at the bottom of the video indicates it was taken at around 4:10pm on New Year's Day 2024. Japanese text on the clip also says it was filmed at Suzu City Hall in Ishikawa.

The 7.5-magnitude quake and its aftershocks devastated parts of the Ishikawa prefecture on the Sea of ​​Japan coast, toppling buildings, tearing up roads and sparking a major fire.

As of April 2, the earthquake's death toll stands at 245 (archived link).

Posts that shared this footage in April 2024 mirrored the NHK clip and truncated the timecode.

The NHK footage was also used by international media – including the Philippines' ABS-CBN News Channel, the US's NBC News and Canada's CTV News – in video reports on the New Year's Day earthquake (archived links here, here, and here).

The footage matches Google Street View images near Suzhou City Hall (archived link).
