Earthquakes hit Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador
MEXICO CITY, Mexico – A 7.4-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Pacific Ocean near southern Mexico this morning, followed by a 5.6-magnitude earthquake that shook parts of Guatemala and El Salvador.
No damage has been reported so far, but Mexican authorities have issued a tsunami warning.
The quake raised concerns about the National Earthquake Warning System, which failed to warn residents in time.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located 135 kilometers southwest of the city of Ciudad Hidalgo in the Mexican state of Chiapas, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the country’s National Seismological Service.
The Mexican digital platform for early warning and comprehensive risk management (SASSLA) explained that the earthquake failed to trigger national warning alerts due to a lack of sensor systems in Chiapas.
“The earthquake was detected until it reached sensing stations in #Oaxaca (a state neighboring Chiapas), where its energy no longer exceeds pre-set thresholds for triggering a #SeismicAlert,” SASSLA said in a post on X.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said, in her daily press conference, that she had been in contact with the governors of Chiapas and Tabasco, and that “no damage has been reported so far.” Sheinbaum also conveyed the Navy Secretariat’s warning “not to approach beaches in the area for the next six hours due to tsunami risks.”
At about the same time in Guatemala, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded, causing the evacuation of President Bernardo Arevalo and other government officials from the National Palace of Culture.
“We were afraid for the duration of the earthquake,” Guatemala City resident Marcy Price told Latin American Reports. “Usually an earthquake here lasts three to five seconds, but this one was about 12 seconds.”
The effects of seismic activity also appeared in El Salvador, where the authorities ruled out the risk of a tsunami, but warned citizens to be careful when engaging in activities such as swimming, diving, or fishing in the coming hours.
