How will a major earthquake affect New York City?

It is a common misconception that the East Coast of the United States is protected from the risk of earthquakes because of the region's distance from tectonic plates.

But this conventional thinking was challenged recently when a 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck New Jersey and New York. It happened on Friday morning, April 5, 2024. The USGS says the epicenter of the quake was about 45 miles from New York City, where people reported furniture and floors shaking. The roar was reportedly felt as far north as Maine and as far south as Virginia.

Although the damage from this event was minimal, for Megan Linkin, chief structuring officer for Nat Cat at Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, this earthquake served as a reminder of how essential it is for the East Coast to prepare for the possibility of a major earthquake. In addition to the fact that the more densely populated an area is, the greater the chance of major earthquake damage, Manhattan Island in particular has unique seismic risks.

New York City's waterfront “was built using materials extracted from the ocean, and that soil is very sandy,” Linkin says on this week's episode of Insurance Speak. During an earthquake, sandy soils are particularly vulnerable to liquefaction.

“When you have soil that is susceptible to liquefaction, anything built on it will disappear,” Linkin says.

Linkin also talks about the history of earthquakes occurring in unexpected locations, the need to plan for these unusual but unusual risks, and the insurance solutions available.
