A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook the southern part of Indonesia's main island of Java on April 27, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or major property damage.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake occurred 102 kilometers (63 miles) south of the city of Banjar and at a depth of 68.3 kilometers (42.4 miles). There was no tsunami warning.

High-rise buildings in the capital, Jakarta, shook for about a minute, and two-storey houses shook strongly in Bandung, the capital of West Java province, and in the cities of Depok, Tangerang, Bogor and Bekasi belonging to Jakarta. The quake was also felt in other cities in West Java, Yogyakarta and East Java province, according to the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.

The agency warned of possible aftershocks.

Earthquakes are frequent across the sprawling archipelago nation, but they are rarely felt by Jakarta residents.
