Adhir writes to PM Modi for release of Kafeel Khans, says Ramraj antithetical to injustice
Congressman Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, calling for the release of doctor Kafeel Khan, who was booked under National Security Act (NSA) for alleged hate speech.
Mr Chowdhury argued that a grave injustice was being inflicted on the doctor from Uttar Pradesh.
Mr Khan is in custody for allegedly giving an inflammatory speech on the campus of Aligarh Muslim University during the Citizenship Amendment Act protests.
With just one day for the dedication ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, Mr Chowdhury, in his letter to the Prime Minister, said that Ramraj (reign of Lord Rams) is against injustice, discrimination and punishment.
On behalf of my party, I vehemently opposed the Bill (CAA) inside and outside Parliament. However, no NSA has been invoked against me or against the millions of other protesters across the country.
I am quite amazed as to why a young doctor was involved despite the fact that freedom of speech has been enshrined in India’s holy constitution, Mr Chowdhury wrote in the letter.
The chief congressman urged Modi to seek justice for Mr. Khan, who had been in jail since January.

Mr Khan was arrested at Mumbai airport on January 29 in connection with a case registered at Aligarhs Civil Lines police station under section 153-A of the Indian Penal Code.
The section is about promoting enmity between groups over religion and other differences.
On February 10, Mr. Khan was released on bail by the Allahabad High Court but was not immediately released by the Mathura prison authorities. His family then moved to Aligarh court, claiming contempt of HC’s order.
The court issued a new release order on February 13.
But before he could be executed, the authorities invoked the National Security Law against him.
The pediatrician had already been arrested after the death of more than 60 children in one week in a government hospital of UPs Gorakhpur in 2017.
About two years later, a state government investigation cleared Mr. Khan of all major charges.
