Why run for mayor?

My choice to run for mayor is rooted in who I am, what I have learned and lost, good anger and hope for Tulsa’s potential and promise. I run to ensure that every Tulsan regardless of race, religion, orientation, identity, economic status, and postal code has a path for ascending movement. I run until every child in our city knows they have the power to realize their most daring dreams – and they can do it here. I’m running because, on the threshold of 2021, Tulsa must meet this moment and show the world what true reconciliation looks like. I run because I believe that together we can build a better city for all of us.

What is the most serious challenge facing the city and how will you seek to address it if it is elected?

As Tulsa grapples with a rapid rise in COVID-19, we must recognize that this epidemic is not only a health crisis, but an economic, educational and social crisis. This moment has revealed profound long-term inequality across our city. As mayor, I will strive to ensure that every necessary step is taken to protect our society from the spread of the virus. We will work side by side with our health care leaders as well as local and international officials to implement proactive measures to slow the spread of the virus. I will actively address the inequalities that have caused many Tulsa families to experience health and economic hardship at this time so that we can emerge from this stronger crisis, making sure that we no longer leave our neighbors behind.

What are your top priorities?

As Mayor, my top priority in serving all Tulsa residents will be to ensure that our city is rooted in freedom, justice, fairness and safety. The city will follow a set of policies that will focus on achieving:

1. Comprehensive economic development

2. Equity in housing and public education

3. Investing in mental and public health

4. Tulsans safety on policy

All residents of Tulsans should feel welcome for themselves complete and original and should possess the power and resources to build the life they dream about here.

If elected together, we will work every day to ensure every Tulsan gets a good job, a good home, good schools, and efficient transportation no matter where they live. Together, we will build Tulsa where no one in the midst of this current crisis is forced to choose between paying his bills and taking care of his health. Together, we will keep all Tulsans residents safe through comprehensive justice reforms and common sense. Together, we will implement a comprehensive climate and sustainability plan to protect our air and water while providing advanced functionality for our city. Tulsa has always been a city built on the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship, and together we can implement the bold reforms we need to build an equitable and prosperous city.

What personal characteristics and work experiences do you have that you think qualify you to be mayors?

She grew up in North Tulsa, on the outskirts of Greenwood, and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. Tulsa is in my bones. After attending college in Arkansas, I spent my entire career working on bringing people together for a common cause: making this world a better place. In the past eight years, I have led hundreds of employees across many local, national, and national political campaigns. After years of working all over the country, I am back in Tulsa because I deeply believe in the city where we can be if we work together. In 2017, I helped start a primary school in North Tulsa, the first partnership school in the state, because I thought we should invest deeply in all of our children. In 2018, she helped build and lead the Met Cares Foundation community organization branch and in the two years since we brought thousands of community members together to create meaningful political changes to tackle inequalities in our city. I am a consensus builder, dreamer, servant leader, believer in our society, and a violent advocate of the city we all love.

If you are elected mayor, will you work for a police oversight program similar to that proposed by Mayor GT Bynum?

I have proudly sided with my Tulsans for years, calling for strong community leadership supervision, comprehensive reform and good police. I will do the same like the mayor. If elected, I will respect and raise the voices of our community members and give them a seat at the decision-making table alongside city and law enforcement leaders. I will press for changes in our city’s funding to ensure that our fellow Tulanse who suffer from poverty, homelessness, addiction or mental illness are supported instead of criminalized. By doing this, we also ensure that our officers enjoy safe and effective support in their work. Tulsans deserve effective policies on empty promises or divisive rhetoric. I refuse to believe that a bold city like Tulsa cannot find innovative solutions that honor the best in our public officials while reimagining what it means to invest in public safety.

Will you support the ongoing work to address the discrepancies in the results outlined in the City Equality Index reports?

Without a doubt. She served on the Tulsa Resilience Advisory Board and helped to establish equality indicators. As a current member of MET Cares Foundation, I have used EI as a framework for equalizing families who have been left behind for a long time. EI is an excellent framework, but we do not keep our promises as a city if we just create studies, reports and teams. We must go beyond the pages of the report and deliberately use the data it provides to make a meaningful change in policy so that the quality of services, housing, or health care that Tulsan receives is not based on race, veteran status, sexual identity, age, or immigration status. I am honored that DeVon Douglass, who led the initial implementation of our city plan, has joined our campaign. Creating a fair Tulsa will be my top priority as mayor

Why Should Tulsans Residents Vote For You Against Any Other Candidate?

Tulsa is my home. I believe deeply in this city and know, as we approach the centenary of the 1921 massacre, we can count on every part of the perseverance and boldness that we must build in the city we dream of. We have been forced to believe that there are limits to what Tulsa can achieve or achieve, but we do not have to accept these limits anymore. We should not be underdog. We should not be the city that seeks to compete – we can be the city that others seek to compete with. I prefer a candidate to lead our city in this direction as we enter the year 2021, because I know, respect and respect that strength that exists within each Tulsan. I promise that I will always listen intently and drive with sympathy because Tulsans deserve nothing less.

Please add anything else you want the audience to know about why you may be running for mayor.

When I grew up in North Tulsa, in the shadow of Greenwood and Black Wall Street, I was always surrounded by people who believed in me and my children. I’ve always been forced to think that I can be anything I really want. As I look back now and remember some of the children who grew up near me, who went to school near me, and who looked like me, I know they weren’t always hurt like I did. It was not because they didn’t have people to care about, but because the city they loved was not always loved by them. Every child in this city must wake up every day knowing that the place they call home believes in it and invests in it and does everything necessary to see it succeed. I am not a politician, I am simply a child from Tulsa who grew up watching his father fight every day of his life for those who need him most, and who watch his mother flow to everyone around her even as she struggles with herself an illness, and who sees the brightest and brightest potential in the eyes of the students I serve At the Greenwood Leadership Academy. I am Tulsan who chose to run for mayor because I think we all have the power to build something better; To build an innovative and just city we deserve.
