Magnitude 3.9 and 4.4 earthquakes shook parts of Box Elder County

BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah – Hundreds of Utahns felt a pair of earthquakes this weekend, both measuring about 4 on the Richter scale.

On Sunday around 5:30 p.m., the USGS reported a 4.4 magnitude earthquake in Box Elder County. The epicenter was 2.7 miles deep, and in a fairly remote area — about halfway between Promontory and Brigham City — but still close enough to civilization that it could be felt. It was about 10 miles northeast of Thatcher City.

According to the USGS “Did you feel it?” On the map, more than 250 people reported feeling the tremor within a few hours of it occurring. Most reported feeling it in Tremonton, Deweyville, and Brigham City. Others felt it in the Cache Valley, and dozens more felt it throughout the Wasatch Front. A more scientific read via the USGS “ShakeMap” (shown below) shows moderate to light levels of shaking in most nearby populated areas. At the epicenter, there is a possibility of “very light” damage.

Just a day and a half ago, a 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck roughly the same area. This happened on Saturday around 2 a.m. and was 2.98 miles deep. According to the USGS website, about 110 residents have reported feeling the quake so far.

There were also two small earthquakes reported nearby, which may have been aftershocks from larger quakes. One of them was a 1.8 magnitude tremor around 9pm on Saturday. The other was around 6:30pm on Sunday, with a magnitude of 2.5. They were both about a mile away from the other quakes, but until now, no one had checked “Did you feel that?” a map.
