Thatcher, Utah, earthquake: Tremors felt in Salt Lake City, North Ogden, Brigham City, Logan

A 4.4-magnitude earthquake shook the US state of Utah, with its epicenter in Thatcher, on Sunday. The tremors were felt in Salt Lake City, North Ogden, Brigham City and Logan.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at 8:35 p.m. EDT on Sunday, 16 kilometers southwest of Thatcher. It fell to a depth of 11 kilometers.

An hour after the initial quake, a 2.5-magnitude aftershock shook the area. There were no reports of injuries or damage as a result of the earthquake.

Volcano Discovery, a website that tracks earthquakes, has received several reports of tremors.

“I felt dizzy at first, but I looked around at my drink shaking on the table. I was alone reading a book and I knew it was an earthquake, but I went to check on my family if they felt it,” the Garland resident wrote.

“It felt like something hit the side of the house, making a loud noise that only lasted a few seconds,” the West Point resident wrote.

The Tremonton resident added: “My whole house shook. It felt like it was coming from below (from the ground). It even scared my dog.”

“The little movement I felt made my dogs howl and run all over the house…the chandelier had some movement too,” the Plain City resident wrote.

Sunday's quake came on the heels of a 3.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Tremonton the day before. According to officials from the University of Utah seismic stations, the quake occurred near Bernrose, Utah. In addition, officials reported recording at least six aftershocks, the largest measuring 2.2 magnitude.
