Myanmar is in the grip of a civil war, largely overlooked by the outside world, that has killed thousands of people and displaced more than two million from their homes. Rebel forces are waging a bloody campaign against the military regime that seized control of the country in 2021, when army generals overthrew the elected government of Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Mass protests against the suppression of democracy were violently suppressed. Many people took up armed resistance against the regime and in October 2023 several rebel groups joined to form a single national rebellion. Lately the rebels have been making big territorial gains. The fighters, among them a group known as the KNDF, are now posing the biggest threat to Myanmar's military rule since it took power.
