How shy Le Pen voters in France caused a political earthquake

How shy Le Pen voters in France caused a political earthquake

Emmanuel Macron visited Oradour-sur-Glane on Monday to mark the 80th anniversary of the liquidation of the village in central France by the SS. After laying a wreath at the site where 643 French men, women and children were murdered, the President of the Republic declared: “We will always remember Oradour, so that history will never begin again.”

This was an implicit reference to the success of the National Rally party led by Marine Le Pen, which crushed the opposition in the European elections that took place on Sunday. In 96 of France's 101 departments, the National Rally party – led by Jordan Bardella – took first place, and its victory in French towns and villages was overwhelming. For example, villages like the rebuilt village of Oradour-sur-Glane, where Bardella received 36 percent of the vote, more than double what any other candidate received.

Stories of sexual crimes are too numerous and too gruesome to mention

These were the elections in which the National Rally achieved the “normalization” it had long sought. Under the leadership of its founder, far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen, it was a party of masculinity and hostility.

In 2002, when Le Pen caused a political earthquake in France by reaching the second round of the presidential elections, he received the support of only 11% of the women’s votes. When Marine Le Pen replaced her father as party leader in 2011, she began to attract more female voters. In the 2019 European elections, a fifth of women voted for the National Rally. In 2024, the proportion will reach 30 percent, just 2 percent less than the male vote.

Once the choice of the white, middle-aged working class in the provinces, the National Rally is now a party that appeals to all demographics. Bardella was most popular among the 18-34 age group with a third of their votes (second place was the far-left party La France Insoumise) [LFI] Candidate Manon Aubry (20%). It recorded almost similar results with people over the age of 65, attracting 26 percent of their votes, the same percentage as the Ennahda party led by Macron.

Bardella's influence was also evident in increasing participation in the national assembly among middle managers who had not yet been supportive of it. Eighteen percent voted for Bardella, more than any other party.

Will this demographic continue to vote for Le Pen in the snap parliamentary elections called by Macron on June 30? Yes, according to an opinion poll published last night, the National Rally Party received 34 percent, far ahead of the Left coalition. The president's party came in third place by a large margin of 19 percent.

No wonder Marine Le Pen was in a good mood when she appeared on the news on Monday evening. She was often defensive and scowling at journalists, smiling as she thought about the success of the European elections and looked forward to the impending legislative elections.

She knows that between now and June 30, her party will be under relentless attack. There have already been warnings that her party could destroy the French economy. Maybe so, but it's not the economy, stupid: it's insecurity that bothers the average French voter. The elderly, and women in particular, flock to the national rally because they are afraid and frustrated.

Several thousand far-left activists took to the streets of Paris

Violent crime is out of control. Cases of rape, assaults, and attempted murders increased. North African drug gangs expanded their business beyond Marseille and Paris, establishing thriving operations in towns and cities across France. They kill without remorse and corrupt officials. Last month, a group of Mexican judges visited Paris to warn them of the seriousness of the situation in France.

It has been a month since two prison guards were executed at a highway toll point while releasing a prisoner from a truck. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal vowed to pursue and arrest them. They didn't.

Stories of sexual crimes are too numerous and too gruesome to mention. But they happen frequently, in every corner of France, to women of all ages, all classes, and all races. No one is safe.

What happens if a woman dares to speak out to say that the man who violated her was in the country illegally? They are denounced as racists in some left-wing circles, often by the same people who celebrate enthusiastically and have failed to condemn the terrifying rise in anti-Semitism in France since October 7.

The Hamas attack on Israel, which the coalition of liberal forces has refused to properly condemn, has caused a rift within the French left, but the Socialists, Communists, Greens and center-left party announced on Monday that they would ally to contest the parliamentary elections.

In recent weeks, Raphael Glucksmann, who led the Socialists' European election campaign, criticized the LFI for its anti-Semitism, a view shared by 92% of France's Jewish community (to which Glucksmann belongs). Today he is in alliance with them.

Several thousand far-left activists took to the streets in Paris, Marseille, Lyon and other cities on Monday to vent their anger against the success of Le Pen's party. Antifa banners were displayed, along with various banners denouncing the “fascist” National Rally. The evening ended, as is usual on such occasions, with violent confrontations with the police.

Perhaps this was another reason that made Marine Le Pen smile in the interview she gave on Monday evening. It knows that the silent majority is listening to Macron and looking to the left, so what does it do next? They vote for her.
