The Ganges River moved 100 km due to a major earthquake: a study

A major earthquake more than 2,500 years ago likely changed the course of one of the world's largest rivers.

An international research team reached this conclusion in a study published today in the journal Nature Communications.

They warn that a similar event has the potential to change the course again.

The modern Ganges, 2,500 kilometers long, flows from the Himalayas southeast of the country to cross into Bangladesh (where it is known as the Padma), connecting with the Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers.

Today, the Ganges-Padma lies about 50 kilometers south of Dhaka, but using satellite images, the research group found evidence of its former course about 100 kilometers from the city.

It refers to a major event that caused a “rollover”—the sudden creation of a new river channel and the abandonment of another—most likely due to seismic activity.

“It has not been previously confirmed that earthquakes can trigger fluctuations in a delta, especially for a massive river like the Ganges,” says study leader Liz Chamberlain, a quaternary geogeologist at Wageningen University in the Netherlands.

“I don't think we've seen such a large event anywhere before,” says co-author Michael Stickler, a geophysicist at Columbia University's climate school in the US.

It is possible that a large earthquake may have caused, quite literally, a seismic shift in the course of the river system. In a previous study, Stickler found that a similar event could directly affect 140 million people living in the region.

According to Stickler and colleagues in a 2016 paper, a subduction zone where oceanic crust is being pushed under the landmass made up of India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and an extended rift in the Himalayas, is increasing in pressure.
