NANAO, Ishikawa – The aquarium in Nanao, Ishikawa Prefecture, has partially reopened after being closed due to damage from the Noto Peninsula earthquake that struck on New Year's Day.

The Notojima Aquarium opened its doors on Saturday to local residents and others who had been waiting for the facility to resume operations. More than 40 people were seen lining up to get in. Fish and other aquatic animals that had been evacuated to other prefectures were returned to the aquarium for the reopening.

The facility's boiler stopped working after a water cut-off following the earthquake on January 1, and the facility's pipes and other equipment were damaged. As a result, the temperature and quality of the aquarium's water were affected, leading to the deaths of more than 4,000 creatures, including two whale sharks.

The aquarium underwent rapid restoration work to be ready for the summer holidays. At the reopening ceremony, aquarium staff and visitors released about 100 balloons bearing the message “Ganbaro Noto!” (Wait, Noto!) into the blue sky to celebrate the resumption of operations.

About 7,500 animals from about 210 species, including penguins and sea turtles, were on display Saturday after being returned to the aquarium. About 22,000 animals from about 400 species resided at the facility before the quake.

The tank was filled with the energetic voices of children saying, “Here come the fish!” and “I found a shark!”

“I'm happy to see the smiling faces of visitors after a long absence. The dolphins and sea lions haven't returned yet, so I will do my best to create a suitable environment to welcome them back,” said park ranger Hinata Kugimiya.

“We will do our best to fully reopen the aquarium as soon as possible,” said Hitoshi Sakaidani, head of the aquarium.
