Tubi's original Continental Split album isn't just a cheap money-making attempt. It touches on topics that could happen, drive some crazy and bring them back to the hysteria surrounding the Mayan calendar, the Y2K problem, and supervolcanoes.

The story takes place in Missouri, which lies directly above the famous New Madrid Fault Line, when a massive earthquake splits the land and shakes the entire country.

Although it's technically dormant—or “fault-induced,” as you might say—the New Madrid Fault has had some minor activity all the time, and has seen some activity recently. Small earthquakes shook a town in Tennessee in 2023.

But this earthquake was localized. The chances of a major earthquake that would extend for miles and miles of the area are 25 to 40 percent, if not greater.

As you can imagine, this has already happened once. A series of earthquakes that could be detected as far away as the eastern United States reached magnitude 7.5 on the Richter scale in 1811 and 1812.

There were plenty of “shakes” but the hurricane took things to the extreme, similar to the global catastrophe in 2012, when St. Louis and Jefferson City were hit by earthquakes of magnitude 7.5 and 8.6, completely destroying them.

Yet as buildings burn and collapse, and floods swallow everything, the film moves toward a happy ending. The question is whether there is a similar solution in real life.

The 25% to 40% chance of another earthquake along the New Madrid Fault includes the risk of a quake within the next 50 years of magnitude 6 or greater. Anything above magnitude 7 means a risk of 7 to 10%.

Of course, some see this threat as something bigger and more urgent than that. Amid all the turmoil this year, the fear is that New Madrid will let it run wild sometime next year, and the storm will blow up and tear the country apart—literally.

We may be entering tinfoil hat territory with this one, but between the launch of the Continental Split and the coordinated drills to prepare for the worst, there’s an expectation that something big is about to happen. And New Madrid will be the epicenter.

One expert, Jeff Briggs, director of the Missouri Emergency Management Agency's earthquake program, chimed in and found the whole thing a bit ridiculous. He told a Missouri radio show that other experts throughout history had never pointed to anything as big as the one in the movie.

However, Briggs adds, the terrifying and frightening idea is that there is no way to predict a major earthquake like the weather. It will happen when it happens and without warning.

Furthermore, the most catastrophic damage will occur in southeast Missouri, and older, historic buildings that do not meet modern standards will be most at risk. The only exception is the St. Louis Arch, which no one is worried about.
