Experts urge earthquake safety measures after 4.5 magnitude quake

SALT LAKE CITY — A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck southern Utah, about 19 miles southeast of Cedar City, Sunday evening. The quake poses the highest threat of a large-scale disaster in Utah.

About 2,000 people were reported to have felt the mild quake, but no major damage was reported.

However, Wade Matthews of Be Ready Utah joined Dave and Dujanavic on Monday to remind Utahns of important earthquake safety tips.

Earthquakes pose the greatest threat of widespread disaster in Utah, says Matthews, making it essential for us to understand what to do in the event of an earthquake.

The last major earthquake felt in Utah was the 2020 Magna earthquake, which measured 5.7 magnitude.

Although this 4.5 magnitude earthquake was considered small, it was certainly felt.

The biggest reminder Matthews gives people is the first precaution in the event of an earthquake: drop, cover and hold on.

“Treat every earthquake the same way,” Matthews said. “If we feel the ground shaking, we either hide under a desk, table or chair and keep a blanket over our heads. The blanket overhead will protect us from falling objects.

If you don't have furniture, kneel on the floor facing a wall with no glass above it, says Matthews.

“Stay there until the shaking stops,” Matthews said.

Other earthquake precautions

“Don't run out of the building, don't run into the building,” Matthews said.

If you're driving, stay in your car and pull over to the side of the road. Try not to stay on a bridge or under an overpass, he said.
