US Army delivers last MTVR equipment for Venezuela earthquake relief

The U.S. military continued relief efforts in Venezuela on Friday by delivering the last 10 U.S. Marine Corps medium-sized tactical replacement vehicles to assist victims of last week’s deadly earthquakes as well as providing other humanitarian assistance.

On Friday, a US Air Force C-17 Globemaster cargo plane transported the last of 10 MTVR devices used to assist disaster victims and relief personnel.

MTVR crews will support logistics efforts to provide urgently needed assistance to local communities, according to U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).

There are more than 1,000 MTVRs in service in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they have been used extensively in contingency operations as well as missions supporting humanitarian operations, according to the Marine Corps.

At Simón Bolívar International Airport, which serves the capital, Caracas, the US Army’s Humanitarian Assistance Coordination Center (HACC) was working with local authorities, the State Department and other agencies on the ground to support disaster relief assistance.

Navy, Navy and Army rotary-wing and rotary-wing aircraft are also conducting flights and transportation, including delivering pre-packaged, self-sufficient meals to quake survivors and displaced citizens, Southern Command said in an update on Friday.

The USS Fort Lauderdale remains in port at La Guaira, supporting communications efforts and serving as a distribution point.

The Trump administration moved to support the South American country after last week’s 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes, mobilizing $150 million in humanitarian aid.

The administration has also formed a disaster assistance response team consisting of more than 250 people, including three specialized urban search and rescue teams.

The death toll from the natural disaster is nearly 2,000 people and still rising.
