NEW JERSEY – A 2.2-magnitude earthquake struck parts of New Jersey early Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Was there an earthquake in New Jersey today?

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at about 1:44 a.m., with its epicenter about 3.1 miles east of Califon in Hunterton County.

Steve Holler, assistant professor of physics and engineering at Fordham University, explains what New Yorkers should know about a 4.8 magnitude earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a preliminary magnitude 4.8 earthquake at 10:23 a.m. with its epicenter near Whitehouse Station in Hunterdon County. About an hour later, a magnitude 2.0 quake was reported in nearby Bedminster.

Then, just before 6 p.m., a 4.0-magnitude aftershock struck the area, centered near Gladstone. Dozens of aftershocks have been reported since the quake.

Earthquakes are less common in the eastern United States than in the western United States because the East Coast does not lie on tectonic plate boundaries.

Today's earthquake has raised a lot of questions about how earthquakes happen. FOX 5 NY's Sharon Crowley spoke with a USGS geophysicist to get some answers.

But since 1950, 13 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater have been recorded within 311 miles of a quake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The strongest was a magnitude 5.8 quake in Mineral, Virginia, on Aug. 23, 2011, that shook people from Georgia to Canada.

Aftershocks are smaller earthquakes that occur in the same general area during the hours, days and years following a larger earthquake, or “mainshock,” according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake on Friday took many by surprise. Although earthquakes are rare on the East Coast, there are questions about how vulnerable the city is to a stronger quake hitting the region.

Aftershocks usually mean that the ground is resetting itself after the main earthquake.
