Magnitude 2.2 Earthquake Recorded in New Jersey Near Califon, Hunterton County

CALIFORNIA, New Jersey (WPVI) — A 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck part of New Jersey on Wednesday.

The quake was recorded about 3.1 miles east of Califon, Hunterton County at about 1:44 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

This is the sixth earthquake recorded this month in New Jersey. Five of those quakes occurred near Califon, while a 2.0-magnitude quake was recorded near New Egypt in Ocean County on July 6.

Jersey has been feeling the tremors since a 4.8-magnitude quake struck just northeast of the state in April. The quake, which struck Hunterdon County, New Jersey, was the strongest ever recorded in the area — at least since the U.S. Geological Survey began keeping records in 1957. The epicenter was between the towns of Whitehouse Station, California, and Lebanon, about 60 miles northeast of Philadelphia. It was about three miles deep, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Aftershocks are smaller earthquakes that occur in the same general area in the days or years following a larger event or “supershock,” according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The rate of aftershocks is expected to decrease over time.

At least 100 earthquakes have occurred across Hunterton County since the April quake.
