The death toll from the Venezuela earthquake has risen to 4,333 people

CARACAS – The death toll from the earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 4,333 people, National Assembly Speaker Jorge Rodriguez said on Saturday.

Rodriguez said 16,740 people were injured and 6,462 people were rescued. The authorities set up 94 temporary camps to house more than 18,000 people.

He added that about 30,000 volunteers had registered to help victims during the critical phase of the disaster, and that the government had proposed involving them in building and repairing homes.

Since many families remain homeless, Rodriguez said the government has launched a unified housing registry, which will serve as a census and database of state-ordered financial aid for earthquake victims.

He said the government needed to move quickly to provide housing for those who lost their homes permanently and repair homes that were partially damaged.

The government also plans to set up camps with single-family transitional housing “while permanent homes are built,” Rodriguez said.

He added that the National Assembly will move forward with reforming the rental law and strengthening the credit and support system to help earthquake-affected families buy homes.

Regarding Venezuelan funds frozen abroad due to economic sanctions imposed by the United States and other countries, Rodriguez said that acting President Delcy Rodriguez has sent letters to various governments requesting the release of those assets.
