An earthquake destroyed more than 100 buildings in Al-Ghani Governorate

WFMY News 2 spoke with the Director of Emergency Management about what his team witnessed in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Allegheny County, North Carolina – Sunday morning’s 5.1-magnitude earthquake destroyed more than 100 buildings in Ghanaian County, but no injuries were reported, according to Daniel Rotten, director of the county emergency department.

WFMY News 2 spoke with Roten about what his team experienced in the aftermath of the earthquake, which had its epicenter near Sparta, NC.

“We have extensive minor damage with localized pockets of severe damage,” Rotten said. “It could have been a lot worse. Other than some shaky nerves, we did pretty well.”

Rutten said he had not heard of any injuries reported from the earthquake, but that it caused significant property damage.

He estimates that more than 100 buildings have been damaged in Allegheny County, but his team is still in the process of evaluation.

The most common damage he saw included cracking and diverting foundations of buildings, damage to rock walls, and damage to chimneys, Rotten said.

There were also main water breaks that needed to be repaired.

Rotten said Blue Ridge Energy suffered damage to a substation, but has since been repaired.
