Earthquakes equalize in last minute but Galaxy score in 89th minute to snatch win
SAN JOSE — The San Jose Earthquakes certainly had chances to secure another crucial MLS Cup win against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday. But they didn't take advantage of their chances.
The Earthquakes, who pulled off a dramatic win over Mexico's Chivas de Guadalajara on Saturday at Levi's Stadium, had three open chances inside the 18-yard box during a five-minute period midway through the first half.
But Pellegrino, Carlos Gruez and Hernan Lopez failed to convert three golden chances, and twenty minutes later, Diego Fagundez curled in a brilliant shot for Galaxy to give Los Angeles a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute.
San Jose equalized in the 75th minute with a shot from Jeremy Ebobisse inside the box, but Los Angeles responded with a goal from substitute Miguel Perry in the 89th minute after a pass from Miki Yamane. It was enough for the visitors to win 2-1 in front of 12,554 fans at Paypal Park.

Although Fagundez's stunning strike was the goal of the game, Los Angeles' winning goal was equally impressive. Perry's shot came from a perfect touch near the goal line from Yamane, who received a pinpoint pass from Riqui Puig and slid past the San Jose defense.
“The problem is we conceded some late goals, which is frustrating,” said Quakes interim coach Ian Russell. “The message is we're going to come in tomorrow and train (and recover) some guys. We're going to watch the game and watch the film. Then we've got to move on. It's frustrating. This game definitely hurts, but you've got to move on. We're still in this because of the result we got against Chivas, so we'll go from there.”
Los Angeles now leads Group 2 in the Western Conference and has a game in hand against Chivas on Sunday. San Jose needs a Galaxy win at any cost to secure a spot in the knockout round of the 32-team MLS Cup.
“There's still a desire for more, at least a draw,” Russell said of Wednesday's game. “I think a draw would have been a fair result given the number of chances we had.”

San Jose struggled this season, with four wins, two draws and 19 losses in the MLS regular season, which left them bottom of the Western Conference. But the Quakes fared much better in the MLS Cup.
After beating Chivas on penalties, San Jose looked poised to get a positive result against the best team in MLS on the West Coast. And while the Quakes didn’t get it, they still feel like their last two games are a sign of what they can achieve in the second half of the regular season.
“We’re starting to see that,” said goalkeeper William Yarbrough. “Everything takes time, but we’ve shown that in a short period of time. If we keep building on that, I think things will go well for us. Hopefully something good happens for us this week, we can get through to the next round and we can show that again, learn from the last two games.”

There are two scenarios in which San Jose could advance to the knockout round of the MLS Cup, both of which involve a Galaxy win. Even a Los Angeles win on penalties could do the trick, as the head-to-head result between Quakes and Chivas would see them through.
“When your season is on the brink and we find ourselves where we were tonight, you're not really going to get that margin, but we'll see what happens. I'm optimistic,” Ebobisse said.

Russell took over as coach of the Earthquakes on June 24 after the firing of Luchi Gonzalez. Since then, San Jose has won just one of its six regular-season games.
But if they can carry their increased quality of play from the MLS Cup forward, things could be different in the final stretch. They won’t rival Russell’s golden days as a player with San Jose, when the Quakes won the MLS Cup in 2001 and 2003 — at least not right away. But it could be a step in the right direction, one that eventually leads to San Jose returning to normalcy.
“I think the team as a whole is feeling better, and you can see that on the pitch,” Yarbrough said. “That's what we want, to get the people who come to watch us to be on the same page with us. But it's 100 percent up to us in terms of what we do.”
