Victoria Earthquake: 4.1 magnitude quake hits east of Melbourne | Victoria

A 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck east of Melbourne early Wednesday morning and was felt more than 100 kilometres away in Victoria, emergency services said.

The earthquake struck Woods Point, a small town about 110 kilometres east of Melbourne, at 3.48am on Wednesday.

The Victorian Emergency Service said the quake was felt in South Morang, north of Melbourne, Healesville in the Yarra Ranges, Wangaratta in the state's north and Dargo in East Gippsland, adding that 1,408 “felt reports” were received shortly after.

The Economic Services Authority said no damage to buildings or infrastructure had been reported.

Victoria Emergency Service has warned people to watch for minor damage or aftershocks.

“Stay safe by avoiding damaged buildings, roads, bridges, downed trees and power lines,” the alert read.

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake was initially reported, but Geoscience Australia said it was a 4.1 magnitude quake by 8am.

More than 1,900 people reported the quake to the government agency, which recorded the epicenter at a depth of 8 kilometers underground.

The Bureau of Meteorology said there was no threat of a tsunami in Australia.

This earthquake was the largest to hit the region since June 2023, according to the Earthquake Research Center.

A 5.0 magnitude earthquake also struck the Colac area in south-western Victoria in October 2023.

The largest earthquake recorded in Victoria was a 5.9 magnitude quake that struck in September 2021, causing minor damage and being felt as far away as Canberra, Sydney and Adelaide.
