Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Strikes Southern California Near Lamont – San Bernardino Sun

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Kern County Tuesday evening, causing extensive damage across large parts of Southern California and was followed by a series of smaller aftershocks, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake struck at 9:09 p.m., with its epicenter about 14 miles northeast of Lamont. The 5.2-magnitude quake was followed by a 4.5-magnitude aftershock about a minute later, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A series of aftershocks followed in rapid succession; more than two dozen additional small aftershocks occurred over the next hour.

The initial quake was said to have been felt in Los Angeles and Riverside County. People reported that the shaking lasted for several seconds and was felt from the high desert to downtown Los Angeles.

There were no immediate reports of damage in Southern California.

In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, the Los Angeles Fire Department announced that “in accordance with protocol, the Los Angeles Fire Department is now in an earthquake posture, with personnel from all 106 neighborhood fire stations conducting a strategic land, air and sea survey of their districts, examining critical infrastructure and areas of local concern throughout the 470 square miles of the City of Los Angeles.”

Shortly after 10 p.m., the department announced that the survey was complete, and “no significant damage or injuries to infrastructure or facilities within the City of Los Angeles were observed.”

Officials also encouraged residents to use the event as a reminder to prepare for “inevitable seismic activity in our region.”

Los Angeles Metro officials said trains will run slower Tuesday night “in accordance with our seismic procedures to check for any damage.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office said the state's Office of Emergency Services and local rescuers are “actively monitoring the impacts” from the quake.
