Strong earthquake strikes off southern Japan's Kyushu island, triggering tsunami warning

Authorities have issued a tsunami warning for the southern and eastern coasts of Kyushu and Shikoku, with waves expected to reach one metre high.

Windows were reported to have been shattered at Miyazaki Airport, near the epicenter of the quake.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake that struck Thursday afternoon had an initial magnitude of 6.9, but was later upgraded to 7.1.

The epicenter of the quake was monitored in the Hyogandana Sea, off the east coast of Japan's southern main island of Kyushu, at a depth of about 30 kilometers.

The Japan Meteorological Agency initially issued a tsunami warning for the coastal prefectures of Miyazaki, Kochi, Oita, Kagoshima and Ehime, predicting waves up to 1 meter high.

The warning was later lifted for the other four.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said tsunami waves as high as 50 centimeters were monitored along Miyazaki and nearby Shikoku island about half an hour after the quake struck.

Windows at Miyazaki Airport near the epicenter were shattered, NHK reported. The runway was temporarily closed for security checks and flights were suspended.

In Osaki city in neighboring Kagoshima Prefecture, concrete walls collapsed and a wooden house was damaged, but no injuries were reported.

Seismologists were holding an emergency meeting to analyze whether the quake had affected the nearby Nankai Basin, the source of previous devastating quakes.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 to 7.9 is classified as a major earthquake, which is capable of causing significant damage.

The quake registered at 6 on the Japan Meteorological Agency's seismic intensity scale, describing it as “when it becomes difficult to stay standing, doors may not open, and wall tiles and window glass may be damaged and fall out.”

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said there were no immediate reports of malfunctions at the 12 nuclear power plants in Kyushu and Shikoku, but the government was checking the damage and casualties.

Earthquakes in areas where nuclear power plants are located have become a major concern since the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 led to the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
