A volcano has erupted after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake off the eastern coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, putting aircraft on alert.

The quake, which struck at 7.10am local time (8.10pm Saturday in the UK), struck at a depth of 18 miles and caused “severe shaking” of buildings in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The quake struck near a major naval base, but there were no initial reports of damage or injuries. The quake triggered a tsunami warning, but that warning was later canceled.

Russian scientists have warned that the tremors in the region could be a prelude to a stronger quake. The volcanology institute said a second quake could hit “within 24 hours” with a magnitude of close to 9.0 on the Richter scale.

In an update from the US Geological Survey, it said the quake occurred “as a result of a reverse fault,” as the area is accustomed to moderate to large earthquakes.

Dramatic footage showed thick ash erupting from the Shiveluch volcano, with the plume extending about 930 miles (1,500 kilometers) to the east-southeast.

According to the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT), a “red” warning has been issued for aircraft due to the large amount of ash in the atmosphere.

The Tokyo Volcanic Ash Monitoring Center warned of continuing “explosive activity.”

“At the location of this earthquake, the Pacific Ocean is moving west-northwest relative to the North American and Eurasian plates,” the USGS said in a statement.

“Some authors divide this region into several microplates that together define the relative motions between the larger plates of the Pacific, North America, and Eurasia; in this depiction, the Kamchatka Peninsula lies on the Okhotsk microplate, which is part of the North American plate.”

The National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu initially warned of the possibility of dangerous tsunami waves for coasts within 300 miles (480 kilometers) of the quake's epicenter, but later declared the threat over.

Catastrophic eruptions have occurred before, in 1854 and 1964, when a large portion of the lava dome collapsed and caused a devastating avalanche.
