NSW shaken by aftershocks after 4.7 magnitude quake

A 3.2 magnitude earthquake was felt in the Muswellbrook area at around 1.10am today, with another 2.5 magnitude quake felt at around 2.30am.

There could be more aftershocks throughout the day, Australian Geoscience Agency seismologist Hadi Ghasemi told Nine Weekend.

The quake was “moderate,” Qasemi said. (Nine)

“In general, larger aftershocks tend to occur in the early stages of the sequence,” he said.

“Over time, the frequency of aftershocks also begins to decline.”

In the event of a stronger earthquake, Qasemi advised residents to get on their hands and knees and seek cover under a sturdy shelter.

The tremors came hours after the first quake hit the town of Denman, near Muswellbrook, shortly after 12pm yesterday.

The earthquake was initially reported as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake but was downgraded to 4.7.

More than 3,000 people across the state reported feeling tremors as far north as Coffs Harbour and as far south as Canberra.

The quake was “moderate,” Qasemi said.

“However, they are powerful enough to generate seismic waves that travel long distances,” he said.

“We used records from thousands of kilometers away to pinpoint the location of the event.”

The earthquake in the area can be explained by the usually seismically active coastline, which typically affects New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia.

The quake is understood to have struck directly under BHP's Mt Arthur coal mine.

A company spokesman said a number of miners suffered minor injuries as a result of the falling elements, but no one was seriously injured.

No other injuries were reported in the state.

Muswellbrook South Public School, near the epicenter, was forced to evacuate.

Emergency services in the area said the quake shattered windows in a council warehouse and damaged several homes, some with chimneys collapsing.

Thousands of people in the surrounding suburbs reported power outages at Ausgrid.
