Real Salt Lake loses 2-0 to last-place San Jose Earthquakes

Real Salt Lake stumbled in the final stretch of the MLS season, losing 2-0 to last-place San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night in Sandy.

RSL (12-6-8), who made a series of moves during the recent MLS summer transfer window, remain in third place in the Western Conference.

San Jose's Christian Espinosa scored the opener in the 20th minute, assisted by Jackson Yueill. Espinosa became the third player in Earthquakes history to score 100 MLS goals, joining Chris Wondolowski (207) and Ronald Serratos (108).

Amahl Pellegrino scored to put Earthquakes 2-0 up in the 33rd minute.

The Earthquakes (5-19-2) remain in last place (14) in the Western Conference.

Real Salt Lake had a 17-15 edge in shots, but San Jose had a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.

Ross Lane goalkeeper Zach McMath made three saves, while San Jose goalkeeper Daniel made four saves.

After their last game – a 3-0 loss to Houston in the League Cup on August 5 – Real Salt Lake has been busy in the MLS summer transfer window, with five new players joining the club: forwards Benji Michel and Dominik Markczuk, midfielders Lachlan Brook and Diogo Gonçalves, and defender Gavin Brown.

Among the departing RSL players is Andres Gomes (sold to French club Stade Rennais), who was having a great season, scoring 13 goals and nine assists.

Real Salt Lake will return to action next Saturday (7:30 p.m. at America First Stadium) against the New England Revolution.
