BMKG: Tonight's earthquake in Yogyakarta from Megathrust area

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – An earthquake with an epicenter at sea struck several areas along the southern coast of Java Island on Monday evening, August 26, 2024. The strongest tremors were felt by residents of Yogyakarta, as mapped by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), reaching a scale of III to IV MMI.

This intensity indicates that the earthquake was felt strongly inside homes, similar to the sensation of a passing truck. Many people inside the homes must have felt the shaking and heard doors and windows creaking.

“The earthquake was felt strongly in Jogja city. We hope everyone remains cautious and vigilant,” said one netizen in response to the earthquake information posted by the Indonesian Broadcasting Corporation (BMKG) on social networking site X.

The agency's data revealed that the earthquake, which occurred at 19:57:42 West Indonesia Time, had a magnitude of 5.8, and was centered in the Indian Ocean, 107 kilometers southwest of Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta Province, at a depth of 42 kilometers.

“The shallow earthquake was caused by deformation of rocks at the contact zone between plates (megathrust),” Daryono, head of the agency's earthquake and tsunami center, said in a statement after the quake.

Daryono confirmed that based on the Malaysian Meteorological Department's model, the earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat. However, two aftershocks were recorded as of 20:20 WMT.

He urged citizens to remain calm and check buildings for any cracks or damage caused by the earthquake. “Check that the building you live in is earthquake-resistant and that there is no structural damage due to earthquake vibrations that could compromise the stability of the building before returning home,” he said.

According to BMKG data, tremors on MMI scale III to IV were felt in Sleman, Yogyakarta, Kulonprojo and Bantul. Weaker tremors, on MMI scale II-III, were felt in Karangkats, Malang, Pacitan, Ngangguk, Trenggalik, Madiun, Kediri, Blitar, Cilacap, Banyumas, Solo, Surakarta and Klaten.
